Beschreibung

This lovely Norton CS1 was despatched from the works on the 11th of December 1930 and must be one of the last CS1s to sport the rare three stay craddle frame. The CS1 has confirmed matching numbers for frame and engine. The engine number is also stamped on the base of the cylinder, which Norton sometimes did in the 1920-1930s, so again a matching unit.
The Norton is still on the same registration number as it was issued with in early 1931 and has had just 5 owners from new, two of them in the last forty years.
There is a 1973 log book issued by the authorities in the UK to replace the original brown log book. There is also an old tax disc from 1948 coming with the bike.
The compression is very good on the engine. Using the decompressor lever, you are in no doubt when it has been eased over compression. Ease the kickstart back up and the CS1 will fire in up in one resolute kick. The gears engage easily. All electrics function.
There is an oil tap fitted so the CS1 will not wet sump from standing still. I have seen quite a few internationals and CS1s in my time, and comparatively this is to original specification: the correct and original mudguards, correct petrol tank, correct front fork, correct rear rack etc. The CS1 is an older restoration that keeps up very well; the paint on the Lucas headlight is slightly tarnished and the chrome on the solid brass handlebar levers is coming off in places, but overall it presents very lovely indeed with a beautiful mellow patina.
The CS1 is the “Carroll" version of the Norton camshaft engine first introduced in 1927. The Carroll camshaft engine developed in to the International in 1933, a term yet to be used by Norton in 1931. Later on, and with much further development, it developed in to the Manx SOHC and DOHC engine of racing fame. However In 1931 the CS1 was not only the sole 500cc camshaft engined model on offer from Norton, it was also the sportiest and fastest on offer to the public.
